A crossbow was a weapon resembling a bow placed on a stock. They were commonly used in Europe, the Mediterranean and East Asia. The oldest artefacts of this kind come from 6th century BC and were found in China, while in Greece they appeared probably around 100 years later. As time went by, Roman warriors started to fight with them and next, also Medieval knights and early modern soldiers. Its mechanism was similar to the one in an ancient siege engine called ballista.
